Electronic invoicing, also referred to as e-invoicing, is gaining widespread acceptance globally, and Malaysia is actively embracing this digital transformation.

In Malaysia, e-invoicing is a key component of the government's efforts to encourage businesses to adopt digital practices and move towards a paperless operational environment. It involves electronically billing clients for goods or services, typically using email or other electronic channels.

A significant advantage of e-invoicing in Malaysia is its alignment with the country's digital tax monitoring objectives. With the introduction of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) by the Malaysia Royal Customs Department in 2018, e-invoicing provides businesses with a streamlined approach to calculate, track, and promptly settle this tax in real-time.

As part of its strategy, Malaysia aims to enforce a mandatory e-invoicing system for all taxpayers, irrespective of their sales turnover, starting in July 2025. The implementation will be gradual, commencing in August 2024 for taxpayers with an annual turnover of MYR 100 million or more.

To facilitate the transition, the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has devised two mechanisms for taxpayers to submit their e-invoices to the IRB:

  1. MyInvois Portal: This is a user-friendly web-based portal that enables taxpayers to manually create and submit e-invoices, either individually or in batches.

  2. API Integration: Taxpayers have the option to integrate their e-invoicing systems with the IRB's system, automating the transmission of e-invoices.

Taxpayers can choose the mechanism that aligns with their business requirements, providing flexibility in compliance with the upcoming e-invoicing regulations.
